60 years ago everyone in Greece knew that olive oil needed to be stored in a cold room. In villages it was in the wine cellar where temperatures hovered around 12–15°C all year round. This is where they stored the early harvest olive oil.

I remember it when I was a child. We used it as our medicine. Toothaches, stomach problems and even cuts, bruises and achy muscles were all treated with this prized early harvest olive oil. They knew by traditonal knowledge this eary harvest olive oil was superior and needed to be protected from high temperatures and light. It was never sold or used as salad dressing. It was priceless. It was our medicine.

But in the last 50 years this traditional knowledge has been overwhelmed by the olive oil industry’s obsession with mono unsaturated fat. Changing lifestyles and the move to the big cities had a devastating effect on the “traditional” medicinal practices in the Greek countryside.

How Healthy is Healthy?

The 432/2012 health claim for polyphenols in olive oil accepted by the EU commission was a big surprise for the olive oil industry. It blindsided them. These titans of of the olive oil industry dismissed it as meaningless. After 50 years of marketing olive oil for its health benefits for its mono-unsaturated fat content, along comes the EU health claim for polyphenols to upend it literally overnight. The health benefits are derived from the polyphenols it contains and the health effect is dose dependent. The higher the concentration of polyphenols the more the positive effect.

How High is High?
